A thinner 38×50 mm batten works with tighter rafter spacing and lighter tile models.
Battens for Metal Roof Tiles and Shingles
Metal roof tiles and bitumen shingles are considerably lighter, so a 40×50 mm batten is often enough here, as long as the rafter spacing doesn't exceed 90 cm. It's worth checking the technical data sheet for the specific metal roofing model, though — manufacturers' recommendations vary, and undersizing the cross-section is the most common mistake I see among investors buying timber "by eye" at a building supplies store.
Counter-battens, regardless of the covering, are usually 24×48 mm or 25×50 mm. Their job isn't to carry the roofing – it's to keep a ventilation gap open between the membrane and the batten.
Roof Batten Spacing – What It Depends On
Batten spacing – the distance between the centre-lines of consecutive battens – isn't a number you can fix once and reuse everywhere. It depends on three things: the type of covering, its working length (the "gauge"), and the pitch of the roof. The larger the gauge of the tile or metal tile module, the wider the batten spacing – and vice versa.
Spacing for Roof Tiles
For ceramic and concrete roof tiles, typical spacing is 31-38 cm, though some manufacturers list values anywhere from 28 to 40 cm – always check the technical sheet for the specific model. Plain (interlocking) clay tiles laid in a double-lap pattern need much tighter spacing, only 15-16 cm, meaning far more battens per square metre of roof.

Modular metal roof tiles most often require spacing around 35 cm, but that's just a starting point – some manufacturers specify 32, 37, or even 40 cm depending on the sheet profile. The first batten at the eaves usually has to be raised by 1-2.5 cm compared to the rest, so the first row of metal tiles sits correctly and water flows straight into the gutter instead of running behind the fascia.
The First and Last Batten – Special Cases
The eaves batten and the ridge batten follow their own rules, independent of the covering. The first batten at the eaves usually has a different cross-section or is raised differently than the rest — it's the one that sets the geometry for the whole covering. Neglecting this detail is obvious at first glance from the street: a crooked eaves line ruins the look of even a solidly built roof. That's why I always advise having the roofer plan the batten spacing together with the covering supplier, rather than setting it "from a table" without checking the specific model.
How Much Batten You Need – A Quick Calculation
Before you call a sawmill for a quote, it's worth estimating the running metres yourself – if only to judge whether the quote you're given makes sense. The calculation is simpler than it looks.
First, take the length of the roof slope (from eaves to ridge) and divide it by the batten spacing required by the covering's technical sheet. That gives you the number of batten rows on one slope. Each row runs the full width of the slope, so multiply the number of rows by the slope width to get the running metres for one slope. Multiply that by two slopes (for a gable roof) and add 5-8% for offcuts, rejected pieces, and adjustments at the eaves and ridge.
Example: an 8 m slope with 34 cm batten spacing gives roughly 24 rows (800 cm / 34 cm). At a slope width of 10 m, that's 240 running metres of batten for one slope, or around 480 running metres for the whole gable roof, plus the waste allowance. Wood Species for Roof Battens
This is where it really matters, because even a perfectly sized and spaced batten is useless if the timber itself is poor quality. In our sawmill, roof battens are cut almost exclusively from pine and spruce – species that combine a good strength-to-cost ratio with availability in the long, straight lengths a roof needs.
The strength class is the key parameter. Roof structures, battens included, should use timber of strength class C24 under the EN 338 standard – this is the baseline you shouldn't go below for any load-bearing roof element, whether it's a rafter or a batten carrying the weight of the tiles. Timber at this class has confirmed, documented bending and compression strength values, not just a "solid-looking" appearance.
The second parameter I ask every client about is moisture content. Roof battens should have a moisture content of up to 18-20% at the time of installation — higher moisture means the timber will keep "working" after it's installed, it warps or cracks, and the covering loses its support at critical points. We dry structural timber so that it reaches the site within the right moisture range — that's one thing you can easily check yourself with a moisture meter when the delivery arrives.
The third factor is pressure treatment. Battens sit under the covering, in a ventilated but still humidity-exposed space – condensation can form under the foil or membrane – so they should be pressure-treated against fungi, mould, and insects. It's a small cost against the whole roof budget, but the difference in service life is enormous, especially in Silesia, where damp, changeable winters are unforgiving of undried or untreated wood.
Worth mentioning too: strength grading at delivery. Every batch of battens in our sawmill goes through a visual assessment for knots, grain twist, and end splits before it leaves for dispatch – an extra quality check on top of drying, which weeds out pieces that don't meet the standard before they ever become a problem on a roof.

Installing Battens and Counter-Battens Step by Step
The sequence of work always follows the same order for a reason:
- Roofing membrane – laid over the rafters, protects against water and snow pushing under the covering.
- Counter-battens – nailed along the rafters, over the membrane, creating the ventilation gap that carries moisture away from under the covering.
- Roof battens – nailed perpendicular to the counter-battens, at the spacing calculated for the specific covering, starting from the eaves.
- Covering – laid on the finished batten grid, according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Battens are fixed with galvanised nails or screws, sized so they bite securely into the counter-batten without punching all the way through. Before nailing, it's worth marking out the full spacing on the rafter with a pencil or a chalk line – correcting the spacing halfway through a slope is a fast route to an uneven roof.
The Most Common Mistakes with Roof Battens
From what I see on building sites and hear from customers, four mistakes keep repeating:
- Batten spacing too wide relative to the covering manufacturer's recommendations – tiles or metal sheets sag under snow load because they lack support in the middle span.
- Batten cross-section too thin for wide rafter spacing – the batten bends under the covering's own weight before the first winter.
- Wet timber at installation – the batten dries out after fixing, warps, and loses contact with the covering at some points.
- No pressure treatment – especially in humid regions, where mould appears on the underside of the battens after a few years, invisible from outside but weakening the structure.
Every one of these can be avoided at the timber purchase stage – just buy battens in the right strength class, with stated moisture content, and ideally already pressure-treated.
